Ayyūb: The Prophet of Patience

How the Quran and Islamic tradition remember a man tested by loss, illness, and time — and never turned from God.

Overview

Ayyūb — known in English as Job — holds a distinct place among the prophets of Islam. His story appears in the Quran only in brief, but Islamic tradition has expanded it into one of the faith's most enduring lessons on endurance. Where the Hebrew Bible lingers on Job's arguments with his companions, the Quranic account strips the narrative to its essential core: a righteous man afflicted, who never once wavers in his devotion.

Later Muslim scholarship filled in the surrounding detail — his lineage, the nature of his household, and the years that separated his affliction from his restoration. Tradition also places him within the wider chain of prophecy, arriving after Joseph and preaching to his own people rather than to a specifically named nation. In the accounts of the Hereafter, Ayyūb is described as the one who will lead those who bore their trials with patience.

١Named Among the Prophets

Ayyūb first appears in the Quran within a roll call of those to whom God sent revelation — alongside Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Jesus, Jonah, Aaron, Solomon, and David.

We have sent revelation to you as We did to Noah and the prophets who came after him — to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, to Jesus, Ayyūb, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon, and We gave David the Psalms.

The Quran's central portrait of Ayyūb is brief but vivid: a man touched by real and prolonged adversity, who turns to no one but God.

And remember Ayyūb, when he cried out to his Lord: "Truly, hardship has befallen me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful."

Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:83

The response is immediate and physical. Ayyūb is instructed to strike the ground with his foot, and a spring of cool water rises from the earth — a source of healing and relief. From this moment, the Quran describes God lifting his affliction entirely, restoring his household, and multiplying his blessings many times over. Ayyūb is mentioned twice more in the Quran, each time grouped among those given divine guidance and the gift of prophethood.

Lineage in tradition

Early Islamic scholarship devoted considerable attention to Ayyūb's ancestry. Most commentators trace his descent to Abraham through Isaac's son Esau, drawing on the Quranic passage that lists Ayyūb among the guided descendants of Abraham, alongside Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. Separately, the historian Philip K. Hitti proposed that Ayyūb was an Arab figure whose story was set in northern Arabia.

The Trial, as told by tradition

٣Wealth, Loss, and Illness

The exegete Ibn Kathir gives the fullest telling of Ayyūb's story. He describes a man of considerable means — extensive land, livestock, and a large family — all of which he lost as a test from God. Illness followed: tradition speaks of sores that afflicted his body for years. Through all of it, Ayyūb neither cursed his condition nor abandoned his prayer, and in time God lifted the disease entirely.

Tradition frames this as a deliberate contest. Satan, having overheard the angels praise Ayyūb as the most faithful man of his age, sought permission to test him — first through the loss of his fortune and family, then through his own body. When neither broke him, Satan approached in the form of an old man, suggesting that Ayyūb's devotion was going unrewarded. Ayyūb's reply was firm: God alone knows what is best, and His judgment needs no justification.

٤The Household's Faith

Ayyūb's wife is remembered in the same tradition as a woman of faith who nonetheless grieved deeply for what the family had lost. Worn down by years of hardship, she once asked her husband to appeal to God for relief — and Ayyūb, in a moment of exhaustion rather than doubt, rebuked her sharply and swore an oath that he would strike her a hundred times for the complaint.

Take in your hand a small bundle of grass, and strike with it, and do not break your oath.

Surah Sad, 38:44

When Ayyūb's health and fortune were restored, the weight of that oath remained with him. Rather than release him from it or ask him to break his word, God instructed him to take a bundle of a hundred blades of grass and strike her once. In doing so, Ayyūb kept his oath in full while causing his wife no harm at all. Islamic preachers still draw on this episode as a model of restraint — a reminder that a husband's word and his gentleness need not stand in conflict.

Legacy

A Name That Outlived the Story

Ayyūb's story left a mark well beyond scripture and sermon. Arab merchants who carried the plant now known as Coix lacryma-jobi into medieval Europe called it dumūʿ Ayyūb — the tears of Job — and its hard, glossy seeds were strung into prayer beads, a small object carrying his account of patient suffering into everyday devotional life. In English, the plant is still known as Job's tears today.
